Correction of Flatfeet -

During regular walking the arch flexes and lowers to absorb shock and adapt to uneven terrain. When the arch lowers too much, it places extra stress on the tendons and ligaments that support the arch. Over time these tendons and ligaments can become weakened or torn, creating pain and dysfunction. This can usually be treated with non-surgical methods. When non-surgical treatments fail, surgery can help restore normal arch height, repair the weakened tendons and ligaments and relieve pain.

Correction of High Arches -

The high arched foot presents a number of problems for normal walking. The foot is often stiff or rigid an does not accommodate on uneven surfaces: this can cause pain and frequent sprains. Many patients suffering from painful high arches have an underlying neuromuscular condition such as Charcot-Marie Tooth disease. This is a hereditary condition that causes the gradual wasting of certain muscles in the feet and lower legs. The result is often a high arched and unstable foot and ankle. This must be taken into consideration when selecting the appropriate surgical procedure.

Tendon Repair -

The most common ankle tendon requiring surgical repair is the Achilles tendon. The Achilles tendon stretches from the heel bone to the calf muscle. It is one of the largest and strongest tendons in the body. Achilles tendon ruptures can be devastating injuries, particularly for athletes and active people. There are instances where non-operative treatments can be successful. Surgical repair of the Achilles tendon results in a lower risk of re-rupture.

Repair of Ankle Instability -

The ankle joint has several supporting structures on the outside (or lateral side) of the ankle. The most frequently injured supporting structures are referred to as the lateral ankle ligaments. This is a collection of three ligaments that stabilize the ankle and resist excessive twisting or rolling of the ankle joint.

Ligaments are thick bands of tissue that run from one bone to another. Their primary job is to hold bones in their normal position. When one or more of these ligaments undergoes multiple injuries, they can either fail to heal or heal in a loose or weakened position. If that occurs, then the ankle joint becomes unstable. The result is a loose joint that frequently “gives out” during walking, running or other activities.

Ankle Arthroscopy -

Arthroscopy is when a minimally invasive surgical technique where a small camera is placed inside the ankle joint. This helps identify damage to the cartilage and ligaments in the ankle. Specialized equipment can be used to repair cartilage and ligament injuries. The minimally invasive procedure can reduce post-operative pain and swelling compared to traditional techniques.
