What is an Ingrown Toenail?
An ingrown toenail is a painful condition in which an extra portion of nail curls into the soft tissue portion on one or both sides of the toe. An ingrown toenail can cause redness, swelling and even infection, and most commonly involves the big toe.
How do Ingrown Toenails Form?
An ingrown toenail can form by trimming the nail too short, improper shoe fit or congenital widening of the toenail. Home remedies for ingrown toenails include warm water and Epsom salt soaks, topical antibiotics and attempts to clip the nail. These measures can yield temporary or partial relief but often fall short of permanent resolution.
How Are Ingrown Toenails Treated?
Dr. Patrick Hall uses a technique called partial nail avulsion or chemical matrixectomy to treat ingrown toenails. This treatment produces a 92% permanent cure, and it is a technique our Baton Rouge office has used well over a thousand times. It is a simple, in-office procedure that can be performed on the same day as your first office visit if desired. This method involves two needlesticks near the base of the toe to numb the area. Numbing the toe allows Dr. Hall to remove more of the nail. After this, Dr. Hall applies medicine to the nail bed which reduces the rate of recurrence significantly. The rate of recurrence without the medicine is 67% versus 8% with the medicine. Recovery from this procedure is minimal and most patients resume normal activities within a day.
